Where: Northwest Territories, Canada
When: 1970, 1998 or '99
Googled: "northwest territories changing birth certificate", but I really have no idea how to phrase this properly
This is about a fandom character, but is only for my own personal head-fanon, not for a story or anything.
The character in question, who is only known by her married name in canon, was born in 1970 to parents whose spouses had both recently died. She was probably brought up to believe she was the posthumous daughter of her mother's husband (who'd actually died at least four months prior to her conception).
Regardless of whose name was put in the "father's name" field (I think either the mother's dead husband, or - if she thought someone would catch on to the discrepancy or had a crisis of conscience - nothing at all), I figure this character was given her mother's surname at the time of the child's birth, which was almost certainly still her dead husband's last name.
In 1998 or '99, when we actually meet this character in canon, during the course of the episode she learns who her actual biological father is.
Now, after all that, my question. After providing proof of her newfound paternity (timing evidence, DNA tests with canon half-brother, etc.), would this character be able to change the surname on her birth certificate from to match her bio dad's? I know, with proof, she could probably correct whose name, if any, is on the "father's name" field. But she wouldn't want to give up her married name to legally change her surname to her bio dad's, so that leaves just the birth certificate.
I suspect the answer is "no", she wouldn't be able to change the surname, but it never hurts to ask.

I'm seriously getting sick of seeing rants prefaced with "YMMV." Unless your rant is about grammar or technical aspects of writing, it pretty much goes without saying that someone somewhere will have a different opinion on the subject--and sometimes it happens even when you are talking about grammar, etc! If you're worried that your rant comes off as judgmental or close-minded, try rewording it instead, since tacking that phrase on probably won't do much to help if it is.
"the taste of this morphine is making me sick" is the only line to a song I know. Ring any bells?

In NCIS, Tony and Gibbs don't really have nicknames. They have never been called "T" and "J". They probably won't be nicknamed that, even in fics.
And while Abby is his favorite, Gibbs would not let him call her that. I just can't see him liking it.

- 19:27 Fantastic. Ranch dressing on the floor, the wall, the TV, the lamp, my Xbox controller, and my grandfather's 1971 Compact OED. #
- 19:28 Amazing how far ranch dressing will fly when those little restaurant to-go containers bounce off the floor after falling off your plate. #
- 19:31 Thankfully everything wiped up pretty quickly, except the xbox controller. Had ranch in the crevices, but I attacked it with compressed air. #
- 19:31 Still ... BLARGH! #

Sorry if this isn't the right community, I'm just cross-posting it a couple places...
So apparently this tattoo artist gives people tattoos for free, but the catch is that he gets to choose what they get. They're all terrible, super badass, well-done tattoos though. I found these on a forum and the person who posted it said that it's "a guy he knows", so I'm pretty lost. My sister's interested in getting something done by him, so does anybody have any other info about this guy? Like, who he is, where he's based, if he has a website or anything? There's some samples of his work under the cut...

We get it. TV Tropes links are omgwtfevol.
Get some new material. We've heard it before. Moreover, ever hear of "reading one link and closing the window"? It's called willpower.
not based on anything specific, just a really annoying trend

Dear various Leverage fanficcers,
I don't care if the most recent ad campaign for the show gives the characters "titles" -- "Parker: the thief," "Sophie: the grifter," and so on. It doesn't mean you have to use those "titles" as epithets in your fics. (IMO they're stupid oversimplifications anyway.) They're not real "titles" and the characters don't use them for each other, so it jolts me right out of an otherwise engrossing story.
No love, just annoyance,
Rose Cat

I have this medium-sized orange, yellow, and reddish stuffed octopus, and I'm trying to gather information about it.
-His legs are straight, not curly, and don't have suckers on them.
-There's a dead voicebox in his head, which is primarily what I'm curious about. I'd really like to know what noises he made, without having to dig the box out and replace the batteries.
-He looks really similar to this guy here, but he's a little pinker/yellower, has straighter and pointier legs, and the eyes don't bug out so much.
Does anyone know anything about him? There's no tag, and I bought him secondhand, so it's not like I can just go to the store I got him from.

Italian Beef (slightly adapted from a recipe found online)
Ingredients:
3 c water
1 t black pepper
1 t oregano
1 t dried basil
1 t onion salt (this is the only salt I used in this recipe)
1 t dried parsley
1 t garlic powder
1 bay leaf
1 (.7 oz) pkg dry Italian salad dressing mix
1 3-to-4# rump roast (I used a sirloin tip roast)
Italian sub rolls
Will make 6-8 servings.
Combine water, salt, pepper, oregano, basil, onion salt, parsley, garlic powder, bay leaf and salad dressing mix in a saucepan. Stir well and bring to a boil.
Place roast in crock pot, and pour mixture over roast.
Cover and cook on LOW for 12 hours (I went 13 hours). Remove bay leaf and shred meat. Turn off crock pot, recover and let stand for 1 hour. Serve Italian beef on Italian sub rolls and top with sauteed peppers if desired. Use the Au Jus as you wish: dip the sub, soak the sub, spoon some onto the sub, or eat the sandwich 'dry'.
Yum.
Not the most healthy of dishes, but I cooked mine overnight, refrigerated it in the morning, so when I got home from work, the fat had all hardened on the top and I was able to remove almost all of it. Plus I added no salt beyond the onion salt and what may have been in the Italian dressing mix, to help keep the sodium levels down.
It was pretty tasty. The Italian dressing mix gave it a kick other It. beef recipes I've tried didn't have.

Okay.
I put
3 chunked pinapples
1 lemons (sliced with the skin)
1 epic fuckton of sugar (like 3 cups?)
on low at about 11 last night.
I check now, at about 8 am (9 hrs later) and it's definitely starting to liquefy. there are a lot of dessicated looking chunks floating on the surface, and underneath that is a thin, brown syrup of tartly sweet nectar. At this point I added:
a few shakes of ginger
1 1/2 cups sugar
and some chopped pineapple mint
It's now chilling for what I imagine will be about 7 hrs.
Questions for the comm:
1. Should I add pectin? I'm okay with it not being the jelliest of jams, but wasn't sure if pectin speed the process along.
2. How much longer will this take? There's definitely still a lot of mass in the crock -- my understanding is that jamming in the crock involved a LOT of reduction... is it done done when it looks less "full"?
3. Should I make a vent or something to let the steam escape? Maybe that's why it's still so liquidy.

YMMV, I guess?
This is about fandom writer's everywhere.
Fanfiction writer's are mostly women and a high percentage of those are teen or younger, so I understand that refering to a female character as a girl is pretty normal for a lot of them to say in real life
BUT
it throws me a bit when I read an ADULT WOMAN being refered to as a girl. (By adult men in quite a few cases too)
It's not even a rare occurrence either, but across the fandom board.
I'm almost guaranteed to find that (often a group of adult) women/woman will be called "the girls/those girls/that girl/the girl" by another character (usually male).
It's just... bah...
What's wrong with being a grown and matured woman?

Okay, so I'm following the crowd here. During my study break, I put all my fics/drabbles in chronological order. Wasn't easy, because a lot of them don't have a specific time setting and could feasibly occur within a one or two season span of time. But I just pegged things where I'd pictured them when writing each piece.
A lot of post-series stuff, but that's expected since most of my Spuffy is in that post-NFA happy Spuffy place. Nothing from S1 and no pre-series pieces, though. I tend to write later seasons more. Go figure.
Oh, and I've written roundabouts 127,000 words. Damn. I think that's a lot. Sounds like a lot. Makes the 3,000 words I need to write to finish the Influence revisions seem like nothing (My writing woes, let me show you them).
( Fics. In order. Chronologically. Kinda a geek thing. )
